That description of Russian attitude towards Jews is brilliant. If you could read Russian you might consider this text. There is a subtile contempt to Jews but nothing more than that. Don and Kuban Cossacks were destroyed as a separate ethnicity in 1920s (my granddad generation), but Zaporizhia Cossacks much earlier, at the end of XVIII.Īnswering to your original question as ethnic "Russian" or Kuban. And even then there were no Cossacks which now could refer to themself as "Ukrainians". It referres to Zaporizhia Cossacks and was written some 150 years ago. It only takes one nut job to vandalize a cemetery and is hardly representative of of a significant trend. Like the rest of Europe there are problems with antisemitism but considering that there are many Jews fighting for Ukraine in the ATO I doubt anti-Semitism will become a serious force in Ukraine in the future. Again most Jews in Ukraine consider themselves Ukrainian and most Ukrainians agree. Ukraine contains the world's 3rd largest Jewish community. Today Ukraine has ~500,000 (~1% of total population) Jews living within our borders. They were mostly acknowleged as such by the Ukrainian people at that time. Jews during this period who were not communists/anarchists primarily considered themselves Ukrainians. Jews fought in other formations in the ZUNR too, primarily against Poland. In the western ZUNR there was a 'Jewish Battalion' formed from volunteers from a Jewish high school led by Soloman Leimburg IIRC. Historically, during this brief period of Ukrainian independence Hebrew was made an official minority language of the UNR government and Pogroms were made illegal. Many military formations of the Ukrainian State and People's Republics (ZUNR/UNR) adopted Cossack monikers, dress, and some traditions but didn't live like Ukrainian Cossacks of the 17th century backwards. In Ukraine the only real revival of Cossacks, which occurred from 1917-1921, was more aesthetic and ceremonial than anything else. The Hajdamak rebels of the late 18th century did have an antisemitic reputation, however, by the last Hajdamak revolt, after the Napoleonic Wars, Jews were active participants. The Kuban Cossacks are ethnically Ukrainian but have long since been assimilated. Cossack pogroms were typically committed by ethnic Russian Cossacks from the Don region. The Ukrainian Cossacks were destroyed by Catherine the Great in the early 18th century. Note: I myself am of partial Jewish descent and was raised in that tradition. Which is primarily in Ukrainian/Russian languages and predominantly consists of discussions among Ukrainians.
